Contemporary Painted Stones
Julie creates acrylic pour paintings using the bloom technique, a process known for producing intricate cells and delicate lacing. It is considered one of the most challenging paint pouring methods to master and is typically performed on flat, level surfaces to achieve clean, well-defined results.
By using rocks as her canvases, she intentionally introduces an added level of complexity. The uneven, sloped surfaces cause the paint to shift and flow unpredictably, often distorting the cells and lacing. When these delicate patterns survive the drying process, they become especially valued. Even when they transform, the results remain striking, enhanced by the rich pigments and color combinations she uses.
What draws her most to this technique is its unpredictability. While she carefully controls the consistency, viscosity, and layering of the paint, the final outcome is never fully in her hands. Each pour unfolds differently. Combined with the natural variation of each rock, every piece becomes entirely unique and impossible to replicate.
